Samsung Galaxy S4: How to Enable and Use Face Tag in the Gallery App in Android 4.4 Kitkat

Gallery app has been equipped with several useful features, one of which is the face tag feature. Turning on this feature will help you to recognize faces on the pictures and then allow you to tag your contacts with ease. After you've added a contact to the recognized face then you'll be easier to make a call, send a text or email message or share the picture to the contact. By default, this option is disabled, so in order to make you able to use this feature you have to enable it first from the Gallery app settings.


How to enable or disable face tag in the Gallery app?
Below are the steps to do so:
  1. Open the Gallery app.
  2. Tap the Menu key and then select Settings.
  3. Depending on your current settings, tap Face tag to enable or disable this option. When the box next to this option is ticked means the option is enabled. When this option is enabled, you'll see the yellow box appears around the recognized faces in the picture.


How to use face tag?
Once the face tag feature is activated, you can tag your contacts to the recognized faces by using the following steps:
  1. Open the Gallery app.
  2. Tap an album and then tap the required picture to view it.
  3. The yellow box will appear around the recognized face on the picture.
  4. Tap the yellow box and you'll see two options available:
    • Me: select this option if the recognized face is you.
    • Add name: select this option if the recognized face isn't you. You'll be prompted to select or add a new contact.
  5. After the contact is added to the recognized face, when you tap the picture the yellow box will be replaced with the grey box contains with the contact name you've tagged. When you tap the tag, you'll be presented with some available options, such as:
    • : Tap this option to make a call to the tagged contact.
    • : Tap this option to send a text message to the tagged contact.
    • : Tap this option to send an email message to the tagged contact.
    • : Tap this option to edit or remove tag.


How to tag a contact in a picture manually?
If the device doesn't recognize the face on a picture because the face angle or other conditions, then you can tag your contact to that face manually by using the following steps:
  1. Open the Gallery app.
  2. Tap an album and then tap the required picture to view it.
  3. Long tap on the unrecognized face.
  4. Move the blue block to the face. If necessary you can adjust the blue box size.
  5. Tap Save button.
  6. Select or add a contact.
  7. After the contact is added to the recognized face, when you tap the picture the yellow box will be replaced with the grey box contains with the contact name you've tagged. When you tap the tag, you'll be presented with some available options, such as:
    • : Tap this option to make a call to the tagged contact.
    • : Tap this option to send a text message to the tagged contact.
    • : Tap this option to send an email message to the tagged contact.
    • : Tap this option to edit or remove tag.

If you have activated the face tag feature, your phone will learn to recognize contacts in the pictures automatically therefore if you ever tagged a contact in the past then your phone will suggest you the contact name when you tag the same contact in other pictures.

      Use the following steps to remove a tag from a photo:
      1. Tap the required face in the photo that you want to remove its tag. It'll display the name that you have tagged for the face.
      2. Tap the name.
      3. Tap the settings icon (cog wheel icon) next to the name and then select "Remove tag".
